“Your nose is bleeding.”

I brought my hand to my nose and nodded.

Ugh. I snorted coke last night.

My whole body contorted and I ran to Derek’s bathroom as quickly as I could. I made it just in time. Blood and acid trickled from my nostrils, vomit spewed violently from my mouth, and tears poured from my ducts.

Eli caught up with me, closed the door, and pulled my hair back into a neat bun. His soft hands rubbed my back gently until finally, after what seemed like years, my body stopped betraying me and calmed. The stress Eli felt was written all over his face; he couldn’t imagine the idea of me being hurt, sick, under his watch. He handed me some tissues for my nose and held me to his chest on the tile floor. He didn’t say a word but I knew that he was worried; he felt betrayed by my choices. I hated that I had let him down again. I cried so hard I threw up again.

It’s Your Party, Die If You Want To (A Liv And Di In Dixie Mystery) by Vickie Fee

It's Your Party, Die If You Want To (A Liv And Di In Dixie Mystery)It’s Your Party, Die If You Want To by Vickie Fee
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Liv McKay is a party planner with a full plate of activities coming up that need planning. She has not only a riverboat gambler themed engagement party and a murder mystery dinner for charity but has been asked to babysit the local celebrity ghost hunting diva at the annual businesswomen’s retreat.

When one of the older ladies at the retreat go missing everyone pitches in to help find her but unfortunately what they find is the body of Morgan Robison was the local party girl rumored to have a thing for the married men in the town. With no shortage of suspects Liv finds herself jumping in to help follow the clues to who killed Morgan.

It’s Your Party, Die If You Want To is a great little cozy mystery set in a small town where everyone knows everyone else and their business along with a main character who certainly had an interesting career. The fall/Halloween vibe all throughout the book was also a nice added touch at this time of year.

I really enjoyed reading about this little town full of creative characters all throughout the story. I didn’t realize that this is also the second in a series with these characters but for the most part you won’t notice that in the story other than a couple of small mentions at past events and it’s fine as a standalone novel.

Overall, a lovely little cozy fall mystery with a bit of laughs, some mystery and a whole lot of Halloween small town fun all in one.

Glitter by Aprilynne Pike

GlitterGlitter by Aprilynne Pike
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

In a futuristic version of Versailles in which people have modern technology and comforts they still live as if it’s the eighteenth century as far as dress and society is concerned. Seventeen year old Danica stumbles upon the young King in a rather compromising position that ends in the death of a servant girl.

Using the situation Danica’s mother bribes the King to marry her daughter to further their family without consideration for Danica. Danica now has six months until her eighteenth birthday to try to find her way out of a terrible situation.

Glitter really is one of those reads that is going to be extremely controversial among readers. The idea that the main character is being forced to marry someone she doesn’t want to isn’t exactly a new one in books but the author has certainly made this situation completely unique starting with the world she built and then the actions of the character to get out of the marriage.

The world in this story was certainly a unique one that I loved. While reading you know right away that the society is a bit more advanced that what we have today in the technology that is being added all along the read. But the book also has a historical feel to the setting with the wardrobes and social statuses of the characters. I will say I thought that the story did drag a bit with the constant mentioning of the clothing of the era after the first few times, some of that could have been cut out after establishing the setting.

In the story Glitter is a new drug and Danica comes up with a way to make the money she needs from selling it. The controversial part is that those buying is they have no idea that is what is happening. I found this very interesting reading if you put aside any moral concerns to what is going on. To me it’s a work of fiction so I can let any concerns slide and dive right into finding out how this is going to all work out in the end of this unique story. The relationship in the story could have used a bit more attention too, perhaps focusing a bit more on it instead of Danica’s wardrobe.

Overall, 3.5 stars. Certainly a unique story line although the drug involvement won’t be for all readers. Absolutely loved the ending to this, a bit of a jaw dropper after all that led to it but also a bit of a chuckle but that is all I will say so as not to spoil this one.

Untouched (Beachwood Bay, #0.5) by Melody Grace

Untouched (Beachwood Bay, #0.5)Untouched by Melody Grace
My rating: 2.5 of 5 stars

Emerson Ray is Beachwood Bay’s resident bad boy, waking up from another black out night with yet another girl he doesn’t remember he heads into work. On the way Emerson ends up in an accident in which he meets the fiery Juliet McKenzie.Emerson and Juliet find that they have a lot in common in their lives and begin spending time together but will they build something more or will it be just another fling for Emerson?

Untouched is a companion novella in the Beachwood Bay series by Melody Grace. I haven’t read the entire series myself but being romance the books generally are fine to read as standalones so this seemed to be alright without the others.

I actually enjoy Melody Grace’s writing as this isn’t the first of her books I have read but with this one I just wasn’t a fan of the characters and situations together. The characters in here are fairly young but we have yet another womanizer bad boy that he heroine is sure to think she can find that good side in there. Couldn’t help but think to myself, girl you are young just move on.

Overall, 2.5 stars, good writing just wasn’t a fan of this couple myself.

A June Wedding by Emily Murdoch

A June WeddingA June Wedding by Emily Murdoch
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Victoria Walsingham has always been in love with Isaac Quinn but instead of proposing like Victoria had always dreamed he would, Isaac tells Victoria that he can’t marry her due to her status. Victoria is of course devastated but when her brother unexpectedly inherits the title of the Earl of Cheshire, Victoria finds herself in the middle of high society and again crossing paths with Isaac.

A June Wedding had all the things that should make for a great read but unfortunately I just didn’t find myself enjoying this one. The writing was good and I usually enjoy a good historical read but I just didn’t like Isaac and couldn’t get behind the relationship.

It’s understandable I suppose that with the time period that status and wealth meant more than it would now. However, it seemed that even if overlooking Isaac using that as an excuse to leave he still seemed a not so great guy later on in the story too. Hard to get behind wanting a relationship to happen with someone that doesn’t seem worthy.

The Witch of Roan Mountain: The Witching Hour Collection by Blaire Edens

The Witch of Roan Mountain: The Witching Hour CollectionThe Witch of Roan Mountain: The Witching Hour Collection by Blaire Edens
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Maeve McMahan has returned home to the mountains of North Carolina after leaving years ago for college and then law school then getting her career going. It had always been one excuse or another not to visit her granny but now she’s back and not too sure over running into her ex Campbell Hyatt who is now a sheriff’s deputy.

When Maeve encounters the ghost of Delphine though she finds herself drawn into the old story of the woman who had been convicted of murder and thought to be a witch. Maeve makes it her mission to get justice for Delphine just as she would one of her clients.

The Witch of Roan Mountain was actually a pretty nice novella that had a good mix of different things going on in the story. There’s the romance between Maeve and Campbell, the ghost of Delphine who also tells her side in flashbacks during certain segments and then the mystery of what had really happened all those years before.

An enjoyable read that the author did a good job bringing the story into the small town in the mountains with this old ghost legend. I’d warn there’s a bit of sexual situations but not drawn out too much but wasn’t quite expecting it myself.
