A Diabolic is ruthless. A Diabolic is powerful. A Diabolic has a single task: Kill in order to protect the person you’ve been created for.
Nemesis is a diabolic who has been bonded to a galactic senator’s daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up together and are quite close with Sidonia wanting to protect Nemesis almost as much as Nemesis feels she needs to protect Sidonia.
When the senator becomes involved in some questionable activities that gains the attention of the power-mad Emperor it becomes clear that Sidonia’s life may be in danger. When Sidonia is summoned to appear before the emperor the family comes up with a plan to let Nemesis pose as Sidonia and take her place to avoid Sidonia walking into a trap that may lead to her death.
When first reading the description of The Diabolic it said it was for fans of Red Queen and The Hunger Games which immediately had me curious since I love The Hunger Games but not so much with Red Queen. Now when finished I can say that I saw some similarities in it to The Hunger Games with the Galactic court being all about excess much like the citizens of the Capital in The Hunger Games. But the only comparison I could make to the Red Queen series is the writing style can border on a bit too wordy which is one reason I didn’t quite like that series and found it dull for the most part. Thankfully though the story line in this one kept my interest all throughout unlike with Red Queen. Now in my opinion if one were to make comparisons to other young adult series I would give a mention to The Vampire Academy series also since a Diabolic is bonded to protect someone much like a Dhampir is meant to protect.
But as for this series it really took a life of it’s own regardless of all the above mentioned comparisons. You have the sci-fi aspect of it being mostly in space and a Diabolic being a created humanoid to protect their bonded human. Then on top of that it becomes a political uprising taking place at the court with their world falling apart around them. Along with all of this there is also some romance in the book to mix in with all the other elements. I never found myself bored at all with this story as it was action packed from start to finish with likable characters and quite often would think I knew what was going to happen only to be shocked yet again.
Overall, a great read that I would definitely recommend checking out. A lovely mix of elements with an intriguing story to go along.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
