“Hang on.” Cheryl slipped a silver flask from the bustle of her bridesmaid dress. “This is cause for celebration. We don’t get to cheer on one of our own all that often. We’re always stuck buying fancy presents for the girls getting married who we don’t care that much about because we know they don’t care that much about us, either.”

“Here, here!” Joan said as Cheryl took a shot from the flask.

“And then,” Cheryl said and wiped her mouth on her sleeve, “those bitches complain behind our backs, but we always find out about it through the royal grapevine, that we should have bought them a pricier item on their registry. So here’s to our Lucy, who we care about, who would never say bitchy things behind our backs.”

“I’ll say them straight to your face.”

“That’s one of the reasons I like you. Here’s to Lucy’s wedding day.” She slugged back a shot and handed it to Joan. “May it be everything you ever dreamed and more.”

“Cheers!” Joan knocked back a shot and handed it to Alida.

“Salute!” She took a sip, grimaced, and passed it to Mr. Philips who took a quick sip.

“Nicely done, ladies. Prince Harry’s Private Reserve?”

Cheryl nodded. “I don’t skimp for weddings.”

“You don’t skimp for anything.” Esmeralda took the flask from Philips and downed a shot, then dabbed a little behind her ears and on her cleavage. “One of the reasons I like you.”

“You’re wasting good liquor,” Mr. Philips said.

“I prefer to think it’s an investment. The scent of Prince Harry’s Private Reserve is practically an aphrodisiac for any titled man at a wedding reception,” she said and passed the flask to me. “I’m tragically single, you know.”

“Not so tragic,” Cheryl said. “You told me you never wanted to get married.”

Esmeralda put her finger to her lips. “Shh!”

“No thanks on the shot.” I shook my head. “The Champagne finally wore off. I’m only getting married—for real—once. I’m not walking down the aisle tipsy, let alone with scotch on my breath.”

“But you have to,” Cheryl said. “It’s tradition.”

“Not where I’m from.” I grabbed a bottle of Fredonia Mineral Water, raised it high in the air, and toasted my Ladies-in-Waiting and the boys. “Cheers!” I took a healthy slug.

“Dios mio!” Alida exclaimed.

“Merde!” Joan said.

“Crap!” Esmeralda leapt toward me and knocked the bottle out of my hands. It flew across the room, splattered Mr. Philips tuxedo trousers and landed open-mouthed on his shoe as it poured out.

He stared down at it and sighed.

“Why’d you do that?” I asked.

Alida crossed herself. “Don’t you know, Lucy?”

Cheryl’s face turned ashen. “It’s terrible luck to toast with water.”

“That’s just an old wives tale,” I said and waved my hand at them. “Go forth and march down that aisle now because I am finally getting married. My worries are over. Does anyone have any chocolate? I’m a little lightheaded. Probably my low blood sugar. I’m good. I’m ready. Besides, what could possibly go wrong?”

HELENA

My cheeks warm with embarrassment at the people waiting behind me. A female employee helps me unclasp the diamond bracelet and matching necklace. The crown though is impossible to get out of my princess ’do.

“Can I wear it through the security portal?” I ask, broken shoes in one hand.

“No, I’m sorry. It will buzz,” the security person explains. “The portal is created to alert us to most metals besides gold and silver.”

I can’t tell him I wear gold. Real, irreplaceable, century-old heirlooms. He wouldn’t believe me anyway. “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to try.”

He lifts his arms in subtle agreement, a have-it-your-way, and I enter the booth, walk out without incident. Employees from two checkpoints stare at me while I pick my stuff off the band. I shake my head, slowly at first, but then I have nothing to say, no witty comeback, and my flight instinct kicks in. I get up on my toes so I don’t stumble in the too-long skirt and stride as slowly as I can into the transit hall.

I need to not stress the hell out. Just, I wish someone was with me to talk me down. I could call Elfriede. I don’t have my phone. I need a new phone. God, how pathetic am I?

Once I’m sure security isn’t following, I haul butt down the corridor. Tiles are cold under bare feet, it turns out. I’d step into my shoes again, but one of them is broken. Would people stare less if I limped and my heels creak-clacked against the floor?

A high-end fashion store beams in the distance. “We’ll help you blend in. Hurry, hurry,” it calls. I run. Benches are in the way. I’m getting clumsy. I’m panicking. Suddenly, a potted palm tree appears out of nowhere, half-blocking my view of the Promised Land, and my torso doubles around it as I slam to the ground.

I let out an ungraceful oomph. And realize I’m not on the ground after all. No, there’s an arm around me, and miraculously I’m on my feet, wobbly but sort of erect.

“You all right?” an American accent asks.

“I was going to Cloe’s over there,” I explain in German, pointing feebly and not feeling as regal as I’ve been taught. Dark eyebrows contract from within a tanned face above me.

“Sorry?” His arm is still strong around me, really freaking strong, and somehow I’ve got a death grip around it while trying to pry him off.

I translate the same stupid sentence to English. “I was going to Cloe’s. It’s over there.”

His brows are perfectly thick or thin and their arcs are so perfectly perfect they look like they’ve been combed, but then the furrow between them smoothens and I discover his eyes.

Oh.

When All The Girls Have GoneWhen All The Girls Have Gone by Jayne Ann Krentz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Charlotte Sawyer has been house sitting for her step-sister, Jocelyn, while she is off on a no technology retreat for a month when a package arrives from one of Jocelyn’s close friends. Charlotte tries to get into contact to find out more about what the package means but finds out that the friend that had sent the package has died.

Charlotte immediately tries to notify Jocelyn that her friend has passed but finds that Jocelyn hadn’t stayed at the retreat and has gone into hiding herself. During her searching Charlotte meets Max Cutler, a private investigator hired to look into the suspicious death so Charlotte decides to team up with Max to find the answers of what’s happened to her step-sister.

When All The Girls Have Gone was one of those books that kept the pages turning all throughout the journey. A bit of a cozy mystery feel to it with Charlotte and Max teaming up to find out the answers of not only one crime but also investigating things that had happened in the past. In the current story Jocelyn had a group of friends that seem to be being targeted with one of the members already being murdered but in the past there is a rape case that is still open that the ladies had also become involved in. Never a dull moment as the action builds throughout the story with several twists and turns to keep a reader guessing.

Overall, likable characters and intense plot to solve, would definitely recommend checking this one out.

(Alien Pop Star, #2)
Published by: Crimson Tree Publishing
Publication date: November 28th 2016
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance, Science Fiction

Daisy Kirkwood and her best friend Kammie have adjusted to life on an alien planet pretty well, all things considered. And thanks to Daisy’s alien pop star boyfriend, Griffin Valentino, she has plenty of sexy new experiences to keep her busy. But it’s not possible to take a massive music nerd away from her home planet and not expect her to pine for a concert or a record store at least in once in a while.

Heading back to Earth with Griffin and his best friend Dev for a brief but much-needed visit, the girls want nothing more than to catch up on the underground music scene of New York City. Unfortunately, thanks to Griffin’s less-than-stellar space traveling skills, they accidentally pick up a hitchhiker. Or three hundred. Their many-legged stowaway beasties take up residence in the darkest, creepiest corners of Manhattan, leaving the gang no choice but to experience a very different underground than they bargained for.

Giant alien bugs aside, Griffin has some epic plans of his own for their trip, plans that involve a concert, an album… and the most outrageous marriage proposal that Earth has ever seen.

EXCERPT:

My boyfriend is levitating four inches above our bed, with a cloud of gold sparks floating around his head like a crown. This makes for a pretty normal morning, even with the soft snuffling and clicking noises he makes as he sleeps. And the crown is appropriate, since my boyfriend is an alien prince.

The alien prince in question, Griffin, floats back down to our bed with a yawn, stretching as he hits the blankets. He squirms around until he can slip under the blankets and wriggle closer to me. Despite sleeping uncovered, he’s toasty and warm, a sign of restorative sleep in his people. I return his embrace a bit too eagerly, my hands slipping under his nightshirt and causing him to gasp out loud. “Gods! Daisy, your hands are cold.”

“They’re not cold. They’re room temperature. But you feel nice and warm, so hold still.”

Griffin wriggles a bit more in feigned protest, but we soon settle into a comfortable position, arms and legs entwined.

“Are you excited to go back home?” Griffin asks, his voice husky with sleep as he leans up to nip at my earlobe with sharp teeth. His glowing blue eyes peer at me from under heavy lids and dark lashes, lashes that are unfairly longer than my own.

“If you keep biting my ear or looking at me like that, I’m not going to be able to go back to sleep. And yes. I’m very excited to go back to Earth.”

“Well then, don’t go back to sleep,” Griffin says, running a hand over his recently shorn dark hair. It’s always amazing to me how he can go from sleepy animal cute to dangerously sexy alien rock star in the span of seconds, depending on what he’s doing or saying. That kind of magical ability can get an Earth girl in trouble. “I have much better ideas for what we can do this morning, Wanda…”

Wanda is his pet name for me, a word in his language that means, “Love without end.” Griffin knows very well what he does to me when he calls me that.

“Do these plans involve you miraculously making chocolate appear? I miss chocolate,” I say, in a teasing tone. “When we go back to Earth, I’m going to stock up on junk food. There’s only so much healthy gray goop a girl can eat before she starts to feel like a very deprived post-divorce Gwyneth Paltrow.”

“Chocolate? Don’t be daft, Daisy, I was referring to sex.”

EXCERPT:

Connell tried to drag the Elemental toward him, but she didn’t budge. Instead, she glanced at his hands. For a second, he could have sworn amusement flashed across her face. Then she was gone—wind whipping him in the face so hard it stung.

Fuck!

He turned around in a circle, scanning the air and the land around him. God, he couldn’t lose her now. He needed to get his wolf back. Not having the extra other in his head was tearing him apart. The empty space inside him was like a crawling emptiness. Sometimes, it was in his head. Other times, it was in his heart.

I can’t believe I lost her. He’d had her in his hands, and then poof. At this

point, she could be anywhere. A strangled sigh escaped from deep in his chest. It sounded pathetic and broken, even to him. He checked the house to make sure she wasn’t there, and then he walked back out to his rented jeep. Damn it, he was going to have to start tracking her all over again.

“Hey, what’s your name?”

Stunned, Connell tripped. Pivoting on his heel, he turned to see the sprite standing on a huge boulder in the distance. He was so damn surprised to see her that he lost his tongue. He just stared at her like an idiot.

Apparently, she agreed. “I can’t keep calling you tall, dark, and stupid, now can I? Whatisyourname?” she repeated, over- enunciating each word.

He was too relieved to get upset over the fact she was talking to him as if he were slow. “Connell Maitland.”

The imp turned away and started addressing the air around her, “He says he’s one of the Maitlands. American accent, so one of the Colorado ones. Yeah. It’s severe. I haven’t seen anything like it. It’s like his wolf was torn out of him somehow. He thinks we did it. Hold on a sec—” Her words broke off as Connell started to run toward her.

A gust of strong air slammed him down to the ground before he cleared the rise.

“Stay there,” the sprite ordered in a glacial tone.

Frigid as the wind, he thought as he regained his footing. Hell, everything about her should be ice-cold. Instead, he felt like he was burning up around her. It was disconcerting. So was the hard edge in her voice. That kind of steel shouldn’t be coming out of such a tiny, doll-like girl.

“Yeah, yeah. It’s fine. He’s on a leash,” the imp said a touch smugly.

Connell growled low in his throat. At least that hadn’t changed. Prey the world over would still react instinctively in fear at that sound.

But the imp didn’t even blink. And she had heard him. She just hadn’t cared. She kept on talking like some gossipy housewife on the phone. Except she was addressing no one.

“Who the bloody hell are you talking to? Invisible fairies? Can anyone even hear you?” he asked incredulously.

Christmas at the Castle (The Ever After series Book 3) by Melissa McClone

Standard

Christmas at the Castle (The Ever After series Book 3)Christmas at the Castle by Melissa McClone
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Katrina Parsons grew up attending a summer camp which is where she met her best friend in life, Sophie and Sophie’s annoying brother Gill. Even though the girls led completely different lives away from the camp they kept in touch during the times they weren’t together growing up and now as adults Sophie wants her best friend to attend her wedding.

Kat never realized that Sophie and Gill actually came from real royalty in the country that they are from. Heading to what she thought would be a hotel Kat finds herself staying in the castle of Sophie’s family and not exactly getting a warm welcome from Sophie’s mother the queen or from Gill who is now the crown prince. They believe Kat has been the bad American influence on Sophie and has her own agenda for attending, to snag her own prince to wed. But as Gill gets to know Kat he finds himself falling for her after all the years of her just being his sister’s annoying friend.

Christmas at the Castle is the third book in the Ever After series but it can easily be read as a standalone novel. The story is a really nice fairy tale romance with a regular woman finding herself swept away by the handsome prince with all the obstacles for the couple to overcome as they find themselves falling for one another.

This one is definitely a lovely romance story with characters that had a background to build upon. Kat was a strong female with all that she had gone through in her life which is always a favorite of mine. Gill while starting off suspicious grew into a very likable character as he grows into his own position of being the crown prince and dealing with finding his way with what that entailed. Great story with a great setting, would definitely recommend this lovely holiday romance.

The Heiress and the Hothead by Sabrina Jeffries

The Heiress and the HotheadThe Heiress and the Hothead by Sabrina Jeffries
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Amanda owns a cotton mill in America and has traveled overseas visiting the mills there. When a night out brings Stephen into Amanda’s life by way of mistletoe the two don’t immediately see eye to eye. Stephen has his own views of the factories and has dedicated his life to seeing changes made to the unfair work practices and doesn’t believe that Amanda is a completely different type of owner in the way she runs her factory across the sea and cares about her workers.

The Heiress and the Hothead is book 1.5 in the Sinful Suitors series. The book is a relatively short read and can easily be read as a standalone novel if you haven’t read any other books in this series. This particular story had actually been previously released in another collection but is now being published by itself.

Being a shorter read this one is a very fast paced romance with the instant chemistry between two characters turning into something a bit more over a relatively short time span. Even with it being a historical romance there are still some steamier moments between the pair so be warned if you prefer a cleaner read. Enjoyed the characters and setting with this quick read and would recommend checking it out for the fans of a quick romance.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Cowboy Rising (Cowboy Cocktail, #5)Cowboy Rising by Mia Hopkins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Georgia Meyers is a journalist and has gone to the MacKinnon Ranch to try to write an article about the ranch in an effort to save her job at a failing newspaper. Daniel MacKinnon had to leave a very good career as a petroleum engineer to return to his family’s ranch to take over running the family business and while frustrated with giving up his dreams the last thing he wanted was to deal with a reporter. However sparks fly between Georgia and Daniel when the pair find themselves sharing a steamy night together but with very different lifestyles would this pair have any hope at a future?

Cowboy Rising is the fifth book in the Cowboy Cocktail series by Mia Hopkins. While I have read the entire series I can safely say these are perfectly find to read as standalone books as each is a completely different couple and situations not related to the other books in the series. Each book in the series features a new steaming hot relationship with a sexy cowboy. All being short reads everything is quite fast paced in all the books.

This fifth book in the series quickly became one of my favorites just due to the fact that I completely enjoyed both of these characters. Both at different places in their lives but quite mature in the way they handle their situations they became quite likable and couldn’t help rooting for their steamy night to become more between the pair. A great addition to this series so if a fan of a quick sexy read I’d recommend checking this one out.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Cursing Fate (The Fated, #2) by Brenda Drake

Cursing Fate (The Fated, #2)Cursing Fate by Brenda Drake
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After Iris Layne had her fate changed when her sister touched a tarot card Iris had thought she had lost her chance at a relationship with Wade Diaz forever. As much as Wade doesn’t really want anything to do with Iris now though he still cares about her and when he sees she’s in trouble he can’t help but want to help her out. However when Iris touches her sister’s tarot cards she unleashes an evil spirit intent on playing a deadly game where no one Iris loves is safe, especially Wade.

Cursing Fate is the second book in the Fated series by Brenda Drake. The main characters in this second book have changed so it’s not completely necessary to have read the first book to understand what is going on in this one. There are mentions to the first books characters and plot though so if wanting to read both I’d suggest starting at the beginning.

This series is actually a really good, fast paced young adult fantasy series that focuses on magic surrounding tarot cards. Both books in the series have had a completely different take on the magic and how it’s worked into the plot which I found extremely creative and fun to read. I’ve really enjoyed the characters and plot in both books and would definitely recommend checking them both out for a new magical twist on the use of tarot cards.

I don’t do emotions. I don’t talk about my past. And I certainly don’t fall in love.

At least until I rescued Tess.

I never thought I’d fall for a woman like her—blonde, beautiful, petite, and with mesmerizing blue eyes that see right into my tainted soul.

But when she’s threatened, my protective instincts kick into overdrive.

She’s mine. She belongs to me.

The Russian mafia is getting more desperate to get her back, and I’ll be damned if I let her go. I’ll risk my life a thousand times over, and I’ll take down any f*cking bastard who stands in my way.

Q&A with Tia Lewis:

What sort of research did you do to write this book?

For my Hitman series, I researched guns, mafia families, accents, etc. This was my first book that I really did a lot of research for.

What are you working on now? Any chance of a sequel?

I’m working on a few alpha billionaire romance novels that will be out in December 2016.

What started you on the path to writing for a living?

I’ve been writing since I was a teenager and into college for fun. I never thought about doing it as a profession but more for a way to express my ideas and put my imagination to paper. I started seeing other successful indie authors do amazingly well and thought I would turn my writing into a career, too.

What are the upsides and downsides to being an author?

The upside is the freedom of expression, but the downside is not everyone will like it. I have a problem with wanting to make everyone (readers) happy and I just have to realize that’s not possible. I’ll keep trying, though!

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

My favorite movie is John Wick which is a hitman/mafia movie and wanted to write a character similar to the film.
