My review:

The Blood of the Hydra is the second book in the Elementals series by Michelle Madow and it picks up the story shortly after the ending of the first book, The Prophecy of Shadows. In the first we meet Nicole Cassidy who has moved to a new town and started a new school. After walking into one of her classes and seeing magic performed Nicole learns of a world that she never knew existed involving witches and finding that she’s actually a witch descended from gods or what is known as a demi-god.

When Nicole teams up with four others from her class to watch the Olympian Comet pass by she and her friends find that they have been gifted with special powers that the other witches don’t have. Finding that the Gods have gifted the group with powers in order to follow an ancient prophecy to be able to save the world when the comet had opened a gate to another dimension that has imprisoned the Titans for centuries and now the monsters are beginning to escape.

After their victory in the first installment of the Elemental series Nicole and her friends have now found themselves facing a special mission to be able to obtain weapons to use against the escaping monsters. They must obtain three magical items and face more mythical creatures that are stronger than what they’ve come across to this point in the story.

A fast paced young adult fantasy series that certainly has lots of fun elements to it. Exciting characters and exciting events to keep the reader entranced all throughout this read. The first book in the series had a lot of action but I think the second book may have even topped it in that department, it jumps in right away and really doesn’t stop during the entire read.

I also absolutely love the fact that a lot of this story is bringing in Greek Mythology and tying the stories into what is going on with our group in modern times. The entire adventure is based on following the old tales of the gods and visiting places and fighting monsters they had learned of in books.

There are also a couple of new characters brought in that were an interesting addition. Also the setting was very intriguing all throughout as Nicole and the group travel to Greece to follow along the clues to find the ingredients that they need to obtain.

I also gave a bit of a warning in the first book of the old insta-love and love triangle elements being added to the story but in the second book I felt that the author has improved that element greatly. The triangle had been broken when Blake had finally ended his relationship and yet Nicole and Blake did not rush into a relationship so they’ve been given time to grow into something as opposed to following the instant attraction in the first book. As that was my only complaint to the story in the first book I was excited to find the new direction the story had taken.

Overall, a great second book in the Elemental series, I do believe this one has gotten even better as the story has gone along and can’t wait to read the next, definitely recommend checking out both books in this fun series.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

My Rating: 5/5 stars
